David Casado @d.casado

"While others hunt for impact, David masters the art of the manual: that impossible balance that separates the brutes from the artists."

If you swing by the MACBA plaza and don’t see David Casado, chances are you’ve got the wrong plaza, or the wrong universe. David isn’t just a skater; he’s part of the urban furniture, though with significantly more style than a granite bench.

He has spent seventeen years (easy to say, but that’s nearly half a lifetime of scraped knees and worn-down soles) as the soul of MACBA, that white concrete agora where the Raval neighborhood forgets it’s just a neighborhood and feels like the center of the universe. David commutes every day from Sabadell, but the train is a mere formality for him, a wormhole that spits him out daily into the mecca of international skateboarding. He could be doing anything else, but he chooses to juggle the clock and his job to gift his best hours to the plaza; because for David, life isn't counted in years, but in dawn-to-dusk sessions.

The guy walks through MACBA like he owns the place, but with a humility that catches you off guard. With a shrug, he’ll tell you he doesn’t get why so many people greet him, since he’s not out there doing jaw-dropping leaps.

"I don't know, I guess they just like my technique," he says with the smile of someone who knows the secret lies in the balance.

And there’s the trick. While others hunt for impact, David masters the art of the manual: that impossible balance on two wheels that separates the brutes from the artists. His technique is so refined it blew the mind of Ryan Sheckler himself. Yes, the American legend was at MACBA, took one look at the camera of David’s buddy, and delivered the verdict: what this kid does with balance is from another planet. If Sheckler gives you the seal of approval, you can die happy (or keep skating for another 17 years).

For him, the Raval is the only place where you can see the map of the world compressed into a few square meters of granite. It is perfect chaos, pure unpredictability. One day you’re trying to land a trick and, suddenly, Hillary Clinton strolls through MACBA like she’s just out buying a loaf of bread, leaving everyone with their boards under their arms and their jaws on the floor. It’s that surrealism that keeps him hooked. His life coordinates are clear: MACBA as the epicenter, the paki on the corner to refuel on one-euro Guaraná, and the spectacle of the fire-breather in front of Bar Kino as a staple of his afternoons.

Now, David rolls with a new advantage: he’s sporting polarized lenses in his Ravals. He claims it’s to see the asphalt better, but we know it’s so the glow of his own talent doesn’t blind him while he continues to reign, unintentionally, over the most famous plaza in the world.

If you pass by MACBA and see someone making magic on two wheels with an elegance that feels almost insulting, say hello. You are standing before the King of the Manual.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but a video of David hitting manuals is worth a thousand skate tutorials. We headed down to the plaza to film Episode III of Raval In Focus, and the result is pure fire.

Don't just take our word for it, see for yourself:
